The Midnight Alchemist. Where It Stands.

Five thousand years of alchemical thought, made into a daily practice for a life that has changed faster than you have.

The Midnight Alchemist draws on five thousand years of alchemical thought — Kemet, Greece, the Islamic Golden Age — read through Carl Jung’s psychology of change. The alchemists wrote about turning lead into gold. Jung read them as describing something that happens to a person. That is the practice, built as an Android app, and it is in private testing now.

The lineage

The alchemical arc has four stages. Nigredo, the blackening — the self you built stops working. Albedo, the whitening — the first silence after the dark. Citrinitas, the yellowing — new choices and new language start to show. Rubedo, the reddening — the change is lived, not just understood.

I use it as a framework for reflection, not a proven sequence that everyone follows. Alchemy’s history is long and contested, and the app does not pretend otherwise. The sources are all in The Research — start with the ancient African origins of alchemy.

Underneath sits a plain observation. A new role, a move, an ending — the title changes before the person does. I call that gap identity lag. Herminia Ibarra’s research on provisional selves shows we try on a new identity before we grow into it. Jung’s work on the shadow says the parts we push out of view keep steering anyway.

What the app does

It opens with a four-step Audit — how you would describe yourself before the change, and how you want to act from now on. From your answers it writes short reflections for morning, midday and evening. Read them, or listen in your phone’s own speech voice. An evening journal holds what comes up — write it or speak it.

Miss a day and Grace mode meets you instead of a broken streak. No shame. No pretending the gap did not happen. Just the forge, reignited.

The reflection text is written with AI, and the app says so — the AI disclosure is public.

The Midnight Alchemist App on Android — three screens: the four-step Audit, today’s morning, midday and evening reflections, and Grace mode welcoming you back after three days away. Built by Dennis Obel.

Who can use it today

Android only. There is no iPhone version. The app is in private testing and the Google Play listing is not open to the public yet, so the way in is the waitlist — one email, the day a place opens. Join from anywhere and you will be told if it opens where you are.

Private testing is free for invited members. The public release will be a paid monthly subscription, with the price shown in Google Play before you buy. I will not call it free, because it will not be.

Help it grow

Shadow work, inner work and Jung’s psychology are what people search for when a life changes. Social is where they find this. Follow, like and share — and tell your family and friends, especially anyone in the middle of a change.

Follow on Instagram · Follow on TikTok — both @midnightalchemistapp. Every follow, like and share puts it in front of someone who needs it. The instinct behind all of it is in why I build here.
